October Video: Ike's In Red Wing
October Red WingMN.org Video of the Month In October 1960, then President Eisenhower came to Red Wing to open the new Hiawatha Interstate Bridge. In what is said as the largest gathering in Red Wing, Ike spoke to thousands right in the city center. His Vice President Richard Nixon was running for the presidency and was one month from that historic vote but instead of supporting Nixon, Ike choose to spend his time talking about the importance of the United Nations in supporting global peace. (read his entire speech at; http://www.presidency.ucsb.edu/ws/?pid=11985)
Later the bridge was renamed Eisenhower Bridge. Thanks to film from the event here are video
clips from that historic visit (2nd by a sitting President) of Ike to Red Wing.
